Introduction

Move over Twitter, there's a new sheriff in town! Introducing Threads, the social media app that has taken the world by storm — well, since last week. In fact, Threads gained a whopping 30 million registered users in just two days! Take that, Twitter!

But, what is Threads? Threads is a new app from Meta that's integrated with Instagram. It's basically a microblogging platform, like Twitter, but with a few key differences.

How is Threads different from Twitter?

  • Audience: Threads is made for more intimate thoughts, less “sell yourself” more “be yourself”. Threads is designed for a safer space, to enable more positive productive conversations, at least we hope it stays like this, while Twitter is more focused on public conversations and news. Threads recommends content according to the people you follow on Instagram and beyond.

  • Visuality: Threads is more visual than Twitter, with much better support for photos and videos. This means that you can share more of your life with your friends on Threads, including your photos, videos, and thoughts. That being said, Threads lets you post five-minute videos. Now, in a world of TikToks and reels, let’s see how this affects the appeal of short vs. long-form content.

  • Talks to your other apps: Threads provides seamless integration with Instagram, making managing content across multiple apps and devices easier for brands and creators. This is only the beginning, Meta plans on making Threads compatible with the ActivityPub Protocol, so you can easily expand reach with other apps and services with little to no effort.

  • Length: Threads posts can be up to 500 characters long, while Twitter posts are limited to 280 characters. This means that you have more space to express yourself on Threads. On Twitter, you have to be more concise.

  • Hashtags: While Threads allows replies from non-followers, forget about hashtags and trending topics. You'll have to rely on good old digital word-of-mouth to get discovered. It's like a social media treasure hunt!

  • Fediverse: If you don't know what the fediverse is, don't worry, we'll explain it real quick. It's like a secret club of decentralized and interconnected social networks where everyone can interact, even if they're using different apps. It's the rebel of the social media world, giving privacy-friendly and censorship-resistant vibes.

Who should use Threads?

So, is Threads worth a try? Absolutely, my friend! Twitter might have been the go-to platform for news and brands, but now there's a hole in the social media landscape waiting to be filled, and Threads could be just the right fit for the following people:

  • Instagrammers: If you're an Instagrammer or a brand on Instagram who wants to share more personal updates with your friends, then Threads is a great option. You can use Threads to share your photos, videos, and thoughts with your close friends, without having to post them on your public Instagram feed.

  • Content creators: Threads is also a good choice for content creators who want to share more visual content with their audience. You can use Threads to share behind-the-scenes photos and videos from your creative process, or to share your thoughts on current events.

  • Businesses: Businesses in the business, finance, or tech industries could use Threads to connect with their target audience. You can use Threads to share company news, product updates, or employee spotlights.

There is one downfall to Threads… Deleting your Threads account will also delete your Instagram account. You can deactivate Threads without affecting Instagram but you cannot delete Threads as of right now.

How can you use Threads to grow your audience organically?

Oh, did we mention that Threads is ad-less? Yes, you heard that right. No pesky ads to ruin your scrolling experience. It's a paradise for organic marketing. With a large user base hungry for content, and with similarities to Twitter and Instagram, Threads is the place to flex your organic marketing muscles. Increased trust, better engagement, and a level playing field for brands with smaller budgets—Threads has got it all.

There are a few things you can do to use Threads to grow your audience organically:

  • Post regularly. The more you post, the more likely people are to see your content and follow you.

  • Interact with your followers. Like and comment on other people's posts, and respond to comments on your own posts. This shows that you're engaged with your audience, and it encourages them to engage with you.

  • Reshare interesting posts from other people. This is a great way to show your followers that you're paying attention to what they're interested in. It also helps you to reach a wider audience.

  • Nail down what content to share. Figure out what your audience wants to hear from you post and put out content that addresses that — you’re more likely to create content that’ll be a hit that way.
